Gwinnett County Waste Collection Will Not Change: “Same Day, Same Company, Same Can”

Judge’s ruling halts illegal franchise plan, protects citizen choice

WINDER, Ga., Jan. 1, 2009 - Nearly 90,000 customers of Robertson and Allied Waste continue to receive trash and recycling service as usual as 2009 begins. Tens of thousands more are confused by a failed plan to change how trash services are provided in Gwinnett.

Robertson and Allied Waste want to clear up any confusion and make sure that problems for their customers are minimal. Their message: "Unless you want to switch service providers, your current waste hauler will continue to provide the same service on the same day of the week, using the same can."

In recent weeks, thousands of WastePro and Advanced Waste cans have appeared in driveways throughout the county and many residents have received a premature invoice from one of these companies. Residents are not required to pay these bills. Due to a ruling of the Gwinnett County Superior Court earlier this month, Gwinnettians are still free to choose from several reliable, local haulers. Any invoice or cans received from these other haulers can be disregarded. If a resident has already paid an invoice to WastePro or Advanced, they can call that company and request a full refund.

"For nearly three decades, Gwinnett County citizens have chosen Robertson Sanitation, Allied Waste and BFI to pick up and recycle their trash," said Jack Perko, area president, Republic Services of Georgia (parent company of Robertson and Allied). "As the owners of the only recycling facility in the county, and the only private landfill, we will continue to provide the same great services to our customers throughout the county. Your trash will be picked up on the same day, by the same company, in the same can."
